Connecting with Spirit: How to Recognize Signs from Loved Ones and the Afterlife

Have you ever had a light flicker for no apparent reason, noticed your pet reacting to something you couldn't see, or had something happen that immediately made you think of a loved one who has crossed over?

I believe Spirit is around us much more than we realize. The signs aren't always big or dramatic. Sometimes they're actually very simple. The more we learn to pay attention and trust our intuition, the easier it can become to recognize those little moments of connection.

Through my own journey with spiritual mediumship and connecting with Spirit, I've had many experiences that have made me stop and think, "Okay, I know something is going on here."

How Spirit Has Gotten My Attention

I've experienced things in my own home that I couldn't easily explain.

I've had objects move and bathroom lights flicker. I've also watched my dog suddenly begin barking when I feel Spirit trying to enter my home.

Animals are something I find especially interesting when we're talking about connecting with Spirit. They don't question everything the way we tend to as humans. They simply react to what they're sensing.

Have you ever seen your dog or cat suddenly stare at an empty space? Maybe they start barking, become alert, or seem to be watching something you can't see.

We might immediately say, "There's nothing there."

But maybe they're noticing something we aren't.

Signs from Loved Ones Who Have Crossed Over

One of the questions I often hear is, "How do I know if a loved one in Spirit is trying to connect with me?"

There isn't one answer because signs from loved ones can be very personal.

You might notice:

• Lights flickering at meaningful moments
• A particular bird or animal appearing repeatedly
• Feathers or other meaningful objects showing up
• A familiar song playing when you're thinking about someone
• A smell that reminds you immediately of your loved one
• Dreams that feel different from ordinary dreams
• A sudden feeling or knowing that someone is near

What matters isn't necessarily the sign itself. It's what that sign means to you.

If your grandmother loved a particular bird and that bird suddenly starts appearing when you're thinking about her, that may hold a completely different meaning for you than it would for someone else.

I believe Spirit works with what we will recognize.

Is It Spirit or Just a Coincidence?

This is where our human mind can really get involved.

We experience something and almost immediately start questioning it.

"Did that really happen?"

"Am I imagining this?"

"Was it just a coincidence?"

Discernment is important when working with Spirit, and I don't believe we need to turn every little thing that happens into a sign.

But I also don't think we need to dismiss everything.

Instead, become curious.

If something happens once, notice it. If it continues happening or appears at meaningful times, pay a little more attention.

Sometimes we ask for a sign and then become so focused on what we think that sign should look like that we miss what's actually being shown to us.

Religion, Mediumship and Connecting with Spirit

For me, another part of this journey has been understanding how my connection with Spirit fits with my own beliefs.

When you've been raised with certain religious teachings, developing intuitive or mediumistic abilities can bring up a lot of questions.

I understand that personally.

Over time, I've had to learn what connecting with Spirit means to me and how my relationship with the Divine fits into that connection.

I work with the Divine, Archangels, Guardian Angels and loved ones in the White Light. Creating boundaries and working with intention are very important parts of how I personally connect.

I've also learned that it's okay to ask questions.

You don't have to believe something simply because someone else tells you it's true. Your connection with the Divine is your own, and learning to trust yourself is part of developing your intuition.

Can You Learn to Connect with Spirit?

I believe mediumship and intuitive abilities can be developed.

Some people may naturally notice their intuitive abilities at a very young age, while others don't begin recognizing them until much later in life.

Either way, developing those abilities takes practice.

I often compare it to learning any other skill. Someone may naturally be good at playing an instrument, but that doesn't mean they don't have to practice.

Connecting with Spirit is similar.

You learn how you receive information. You practice. You build confidence. You learn discernment. And, most importantly, you learn to trust yourself.

For me, claircognizance—or clear knowing—is one of the strongest ways I receive information. Sometimes I simply know something without being able to explain where that knowing came from.

Your strongest intuitive sense may be completely different.

You might feel energy very strongly, see images in your mind, hear words or phrases, or simply have that same sense of knowing.

There isn't one right way to connect.

Start by Paying Attention

If you're curious about connecting with Spirit or developing your intuitive abilities, my advice is to start simply.

Pay attention.

Notice what you're feeling. Notice what happens around you. Notice repeated signs. Pay attention to your dreams, your intuition, animals, nature and those moments when something inside you says, "There's more to this."

You don't have to force a connection.

And you certainly don't need to have everything figured out.

My own connection with Spirit has developed over time through learning, practicing, questioning and trusting. I'm still learning too. I think that's part of the journey.

The more we become aware of our intuition and the Divine connection around us, the more we may begin to notice that the signs were there all along.

We just needed to learn how to recognize them.
